"Fire and I've Seen Rain" Lyrics

"Just yesterday forenoon, they let me know you were gone.
Susanne, the plans they made put an stop to you.
I walked out this morning time, and I wrote down this song,
I just can't retrieve who to ship it to.

I've seen burn and I've seen rain;
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
Simply I always thought that I'd see you lot once again.

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus;
You've got to help me make a stand up,;
Y'all've just got to see me through some other mean solar day.
My body's aching and my fourth dimension is at hand,
And I won't make information technology whatever other fashion.

Oh, I've seen fire, and I've seen pelting;
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen lonely times when I could not discover a friend,
But I always thought that I'd run into you lot again.

Been walking my heed to an like shooting fish in a barrel time, my back turned towards the sun;
Lord knows, when the common cold wind blows it'll plough your head effectually.
Well, there's hours of time on the phone line to talk about things to come;
Sweetness dreams and flying machines in pieces on the footing.

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen pelting;
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never cease;
I've seen solitary times when I could not find a friend,
Only I always thought that I'd see you, infant, 1 more time again, at present.

Thought I'd see y'all i more time once more;
There's merely a few things coming my style this fourth dimension around, now;
Thought I'd see y'all, thought I'd see y'all burn and pelting, now."

James Taylor Lyrics Explained

James Taylor wrote and sang this song, which was inspired by a friend who died. After existence recorded, this song elevated him to a pop star at 22 when it became a hit.

Taylor stated that he wrote this song three dissimilar times throughout 1968. His writing began while auditioning in London for The Beatles' Apple Records. So Taylor wrote more of it while he stayed in a Manhattan Hospital. However, he finished it at the Austin Riggs Centre, where he was staying for drug rehabilitation. In 1972 Taylor stated:

"Fire and Rain" has three verses. The outset verse is most my reactions to the death of a friend. The second poesy is about my arrival in this state with a monkey on my back, and at that place Jesus is an expression of my desperation in trying to get through the time when my body was aching and the fourth dimension was at hand when I had to do it... And the third verse of that song refers to my recuperation in Austin Riggs which lasted nearly v months.

Although he wrote this at simply 20 years quondam, it touches people of all ages and is however relevant twoscore-plus years afterward.

First Poesy Explained

"Just yesterday morning they permit me know you were gone
I merely can't remember who to send it to
Susanne the plans they fabricated put an finish to yous
I walked out this morning and I wrote downward this song"

When he refers to Susanne, he is referring to Susanne Schnerr. Taylor states he used to get high with her and knew her quite well. He met her in New York in 1967 and hung out with her quite often when he was part of a group called The Flying Motorcar. The Flying Motorcar was the grouping where he became successful equally a musician and writer.

Susanne, or who Taylor affectionately refers to as Suzie, committed suicide. He was living in London with mutual friends. Since his career began lifting off and his fame grew, his friends waited until later to give him the news since they knew Taylor was then excited about his upcoming tape bargain. He didn't find out about her suicide until 6 months later.

He as well states in 1 interview that he ever felt bad most the line, "The plans they made put an finish to you," because people take fabricated assumptions virtually whom "they" are. He intended 'they' to exist the Fates. His greatest fear was that her parents thought he blamed them. He did not.

Second Verse Explained

"Won't you expect downward upon me, Jesus
You've got to assist me brand a stand
You've just got to see me through some other day
My body'southward aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make information technology any other style"

He wrote this verse in 1968 later he stayed in a mental hospital. He was battling a heroin addiction. He wrote this as a plea to Jesus, as in Jesus Christ, to help him 'make a stand' confronting his drug addiction, which portrays how much of a hold the addiction had on him. He makes the hold the addiction had on him when he belts out, "I won't go far whatever other way."

Although it would exist nice to say that in 1968, he finally kicked the habit, he did not kick the habit until much later. Fortunately, unlike many similar him, he was finally able to make a stand against his habit in 1986, when he became sober. He has been sober always since but still feels that he is a recovering addict.

Third Verse Explained

"Has been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the common cold wind blows information technology'll plough your head around
Well, at that place'south hours of fourth dimension on the phone line to talk about things
To come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground"

Earlier, during his senior twelvemonth in loftier school, he had been treated at a hospital for low. He and a friend, Danny Kortchmar, began a band called the Flying Machine. It was a approval in disguise when the group failed just a few months afterwards starting, and he started his solo career. The last line refers to this ring and his earlier attempts at finding success as a writer.

Burn down and Pelting Significant

Burn and Rain remains and probably ever volition exist one of my favorite songs. Information technology touches me on a deep level. Although I've never experienced depression or drug addiction, I even so know how it feels to exist on the bottom, hoping for a moment to arise. Life is like a roller coaster, with many ups and downs, scary at times, exhilarating, and sometimes simply plain annoying.

He has such a distinctive voice, yous tin always tell it's him when he helps out a friend or even plays an instrument. He plays the banjo part on Neil Young's Quondam Human. I wish he stayed with Carly Simon, she loved him then much.

I tried for a good while to play his songs on piano. They're not very adaptable to it. One time, though, information technology just came to me and I was able to do a fairly skilful job of it. Very satisfying.

Hi A_M, thank you for that explanation. I had no idea he wrote the verses so far apart. I just finished a song I started many years ago, so I do understand how that happens. I read once that when he heard people say that his songs all sounded the aforementioned that he was surprised. He said he works to vary his songs and structure of the music only that he just has a narrow lens they all come out of and so it just sounds similar that.

I agree with him, his songs are non equally piece of cake to play equally you might think if you really play them as he does. That's a chip of genius there. =:)

When lyrics, melody, and emotion collide, you accept a archetype - something that never grows old. James is in (what I would call) the tertiary act of his career at present but he still sings and plays with the same fervor of his early days. I even so beloved to hear him sing

James Taylor actually stated in an interview that he is himself in his music. He acted as if that was not very creative and he lacked imagination, but personally I think it'due south kind of refreshing.
